51Talk Online English Courses – Practice English to cope with life and exams!
Parent’s name: Shermyn
Child’s name: Sky, 7 years old
Time flies like a sword and the year 2022 is coming to an end. It has been eight months since we started attending Primary School. For those of you who follow my blog, you will know that before he started Primary 1, he was a Home Schooler, which means he learnt independently at home. Since starting Primary 1, we have not let him attend any extra tuition classes. Except for English, which he attends 51Talk’s online English programme, all other subjects are taught by me personally at home.
Whenever I’m looking for tuition or learning platforms for Sky, I always let my child take a FREE trial lesson before deciding whether to let him/her take a formal lesson or not! Personally, I prefer online classes. I think online classes are good for independent learners.
Bidirectional interactive learning through play, simultaneous improvement of oral and reading skills
Sky will use the mouse to write down the answers on the screen when answering the questions from the teacher in class. I have to say, the 51Talk App interface design is very good, allowing children to write and speak at the same time to interact with the teacher. In this way, the ability to write and speak can be improved simultaneously.
Sky wrote a “Yes” on the screen. Lego is also one of his favourite toys. Using Lego to bring in the subject matter of the lesson is very appropriate for a primary school student. Children are also more able to learn English and understand the topics in the classroom.
Playback of mastery and reinforcement of revision after the lesson
A lot of people ask me why I prefer to have my children attend online classes instead of physical classes. In fact, the reason I personally prefer online classes is that apart from saving time on delivery, online classes also allow me to monitor my child’s lessons. Even if I can’t be there on the day of the lesson, I can still watch the video replay of the lesson. I can see how my child is doing compared to a physical class.
Usually, 15 minutes before the lesson, Sky will study the content of the lesson. After the lesson, I also let him watch the video again so that he can check his performance. By studying before class, practising during class and reviewing after class, he is able to learn English more efficiently and consolidate his new knowledge.
Teachers fit together to increase anticipation!
The previous post mentioned that in 51Talk, children can choose their favourite teachers. This time, Sky chose another new male teacher, which shows that Sky really prefers the teaching style of this teacher. The teacher’s interactive style is very lively and funny. Whenever Sky got the answer right, the teacher would perform a little magic trick for him, which made Sky happy. The teacher kept praising him for his “Good job” and “Excellent”, which made him feel more and more confident in speaking English. Since he chose the teacher himself, he is looking forward to the 51Talk online English course!
Learning English for exams? To apply English in a real-life way?
I believe that some of the parents involve their children in tuition classes so that they can get good grades in the exams. To me, grades are important, but you have to know how to use English. Sky’s listening skills are pretty good. In class, when he encounters a word that he cannot read, the teacher will immediately teach or correct the mispronunciation. Since his English listening is very good, he can catch the meaning of a word as soon as he listens to its pronunciation. Even though he can’t pronounce words well, he is brave enough to speak and express his thoughts in English. If your child speaks and listens well, it is easier for them to understand the texts in their school English textbooks, so they will be able to cope easily in the exams.
After taking an online English course with 51Talk, our children became very interested in CNN, HBO and English newspapers. I am glad because these channels are one of the ways to improve English. Memorising vocabulary through articles in school textbooks can be very frustrating. With 51Talk App, children can learn English efficiently at home. I am looking forward to travelling to western countries in the future, where my child can be my tour guide and explain to me the history of the place.
